UK-China Joint Offshore Renewable Energy Conference (the scheduled mid-term event) was held between 7th and 9th of July 2019 in Qingdao, China.
The conference was jointly hosted by the UK-China Centre of Offshore Renewable Energy, the National Ocean Technology Centre and the Ministry of Natural Resources in the Fuxin Hotel, Qingdao. The event was organised using allocated funds supporting all five projects. The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) are supporting the projects with almost £4 million of funding, which is distributed through the Newton Fund. The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) is providing further support towards all the projects. Attending were representatives of all UK-China CORE projects, industry partners and high-profile special guests.
Our special guests from China represented Ministry of Natural Resources (Department of Strategic Plan and Economics, Department of International Cooperation, National Marine Data and Information Service), Ministry of Science and Technology Resources (Industrial Development and Promotion Centre), National Ocean Technology Centre, National Natural Science Foundation of China, China Ocean University, Ocean Engineering Institute (CIMC), Shanghai Investigation, Design and Research Institute, Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion (Chinese Science Academy). The conference was also attended by high-profile UK representatives from British Embassy in Beijing, EPRSC (virtually) and ORE Supergen.
The event was opened during the reception evening on 7th of July 2020 by Prof. Lars Johanning, followed by a China welcome address from PENG Wei (Deputy Director of National Ocean Technology Centre) and UK welcome address from Jessica Henry (Head of Energy Team, British Embassy).
On the 8th July 2020 opening session was chaired by PENG Wei (Deputy Director of National Ocean Technology Centre) and hosted welcoming speeches from FENG Lei, Division Director, Department of Marine Strategic Planning & Economic, Ministry of Natural Resources, Jessica Henry (Head of Energy Team, British Embassy Beijing), JIANG Qingchun (Deputy Director-General, Shandong Provincial Ocean Bureau), YU Bingbo (Deputy Director-General, Qingdao Municipal Bureau of Science and Technology) and Lars Johanning (University of Exeter).
The session on the Importance of cross-country ORE R&D was chaired by Prof. Lars Johanning and hosted presentations from PENG Wei (Deputy General Director, National Ocean Technology Centre, China) and Chong Ng (Head of Applied Research, ORE Catapult, UK).
Prof. Thomas Adcock chaired with Prof. NING Dezhi the session: The international perspective; Importance of Offshore Renewable Energy in China and UK. The speakers included: Prof. SHI Hongda (Executive Deputy Director of Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory on Ocean Engineering – Ocean University of China) and Prof. Deborah Greaves (University of Plymouth, Head of the School of Engineering and ORE SupergenHub lead, UK).
The session: ORE R&D the need and successes was chaired by Prof. SHI Hongda and Prof. ZHAO Xiaowei. It hosted talks from Prof. Atilla Incecik (Associate Principal & Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Strathclyde University, UK) and Prof. Dezhi NING (State Key Laboratory of Coastal and Offshore Engineering, Dalian University of Technology, China).
After the lunch break the session: UK-China joint research and innovation programs was chaired by Chong Ng and SHI Hongda. The research initiatives and R&D were presented by Dr LI Wencong (Division Director, Bureau of International Cooperation, National Natural Science Foundation, China) and Dr Ruhina Miller (Portfolio Manager, Energy Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, UK) via video link Prof. Atilla Incecik and Prof. NING Dezhi chaired the session: UK-CHN ORE projects I; progress update. Prof. Lars Johanning provided the UK-CHN ORE overview.
This followed by project progress of FENGBO-WIND, delivered by Dr Georgios Deskos (Imperial College of London), and INNO-MPP presented jointly by Prof. Maurizio Collu (University of Strathclyde). Prof. Collu also requested 1 minute silence for Prof. Liang Zhang, who was a Project Lead of INNO-MPP in China.
The project progress update was continued in the session chaired by Prof. NING Dezhi and Prof. Antilla Incecik. Prof. Thomas Adcock talked about Extreme loads on offshore wind farms project. Prof. Philipp Thies updated on progress of the ResIn project. Alasdair McDonald presented the MOD-CORE project work up to date.
On 9th of July the morning session: Research and Great Challenge in Offshore Renewable Energy was chaired by Prof. Deborah Greaves and ZHANG Yongliang. The session hosted presentations from YOU Yage (Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion, Chinese Science Academy, China), James Battensby (ORE Catapult, UK), Dr SUN Ke (Institute of Ocean Renewable Energy System, Harbin Engineering University, China) and Prof. Lars Johanning (International Co-Chair TT5 ‘Renewable Energy’ CICCED, UK).
The following session aimed into: Resource and Economic Assessment of ORE and was chaired by ZHANG Yongliang and Deborah Greaves. It hosted presentations from WANG Xiaoyong/WU he, (National Ocean Technology Centre, China), Thomas Adcock (University of Oxford, UK), SUN Liang (Wuhan University of Technology, China) and Maurizio Collu (University of Strathclyde, UK).
The session: Test and Certification in O‑shore Renewable Energy was chaired by Maurizio Collu and ZHANG Dahai and included presentations from LI Ye (Shanghai Jiaotong University, China), Claudio Bittencourt (DNVGL, UK).
After lunch break ZHANG Dahai and Maurizzio Collu chaired session on Tidal Current Energy Development and Industrialization with talks from YUAN Ling (Deputy General Manager, United Power, China), Steve Allsop (SIMEC Atlantic Energy, UK), LI Wei (Zhejiang University, China) and Timothy Stallard (Manchester University, UK).
The session Innovation and Research Needs in Fixed Offshore Wind was chaired by Claudio Bittencourt and Thomas Adcock. It hosted presentations from ZHU Ronghua (Zhejiang University/RichTech, China), Jack Paterson (EDF, UK), WU Feng/HU Yinlong (Hehai University, China), YUE Hong (Strathclyde University, UK).
Thomas Adcock and Claudio Bittencourt chaired the session: Innovation and Research Needs in Floating Offshore Wind. It included talks from LIN Yifeng/LIN Lin (Shanghai Investigation, Design & Research Institute, China Three Gorges Corporation), Gino Bawn (ITP Energised Ltd, UK), SHI Wei (Dalian University of Technology, China) and Ed Mackay (University of Exeter, UK).
At the end of the day the Panel Session took place and ‘Cross-border ORE Innovation Needs & Opportunities’ were discussed
